Craig Gottlieb Militaria

Most people know Craig Gottlieb as one of the leading businessmen in World War I and World War II, specializing in the Third Reich. Others will recognize him from his appearances in anthology reality television shows, most notably, "Pawn Stars."

American & European Works Of Art

Craig has been a war collector since childhood and a military dealer since 2000. He started with a rusty German bayonet that his father, a WWII soldier, brought home from the war.

Although Craig offers many military memorabilia, he is most famous for his knowledge of the German army during World War II. With more than 35 years of experience in buying, selling, trading and collecting, as well as writing several books on the subject and appearing in several television programs, he is very popular in the hobby. That said, very few have had the opportunity to meet him to have a long conversation about his role in the hobby. Therefore,

Military Dealer: Let's start by saying, "'Craig Gottlieb' is one of the most recognizable names in military recruiting." In fact, at the Show of Shows last year, I heard someone say (not rudely), "Craig is like the Kardashian of militaria - we can't stop watching!" That statement can have positive and negative meanings. What do you think to hear?

Well, I have to laugh, but it reminds me of something Tom Wittmann told me once. Like Tom, I am a person who loves to hate, and hates to love. Think about that one for a minute!

Military Merchant: Although he captures many soldiers that come his way, he seems to have a penchant for high-end Third Reich items. The risk is high in that area, but the payoff can be great. Are you, by nature, an entrepreneur? Why follow the path of the "famous" pieces of the Third Reich?

High just because something costs a lot of money. Yes, if you lose, you lose big, but I find that the most common thing is more "at risk" of being fake.

In fact, I would say that as a serious trader or trader, the risk of buying into a high war is balanced by the extra care you take when dealing with a lot of money. Be careful to be careful!

Military marketer: Well, let's get back to the issue of militaria, but for now, let's get the questions that many of us want to ask: So about what you showed on "Pawn Stars:" Why Craig Gottlieb? How did it start? How does your reputation affect your business?

Orson Welles Radio Credits

It's as easy as starting. Sean Rich has left the show to pursue his own show, and they need a replacement. At the time, they were looking for "Hatfield and McCoy" memorabilia, and they contacted me because I liked guns, to see if I could help. I know where a gun belonging to Cap Hatfield (supposedly) is, and I put it to the collector on the condition that I am the expert. I did, and 40 games later, I haven't looked back.

The show has been in filming for a long time, due to contract negotiations with the main actor. I had a few opportunities to pursue more lucrative TV projects. Since I can't be on two channels at the same time, I have to make a decision. We all parted in peace. I may come back sometime in the future.

Military Trader: This leads nicely into the second question that many people want to know. It seems that many people know that he participated in the National Geographic trip to Latvia. Tell us about that project and how it came about.

, misinformation about the series has spread on the Internet. I'm disappointed, because of legal reasons I can't defend myself publicly.

Questions With The 'history Hunter'

Now, more than a year later, the show has been sold to the Discovery Channel, and has been shown in Europe this month, and the reviews are good. And why shouldn't they be? Our mission is simple: find the remains and equipment, and personal effects of soldiers lost from the war, and return them to their home countries for proper identification and burial.

Our manifesto takes a strong stand against "black mining" which is a huge problem in Europe. Lawless scavengers think nothing of scattering bones across the forest in search of earthenware to sell... It's a real disaster. Our introduction sheds light on this problem. We received full approval from our host governments in Latvia and Poland and dug in with award-winning battlefield recovery experts. I am proud of what we did and I hope to do it again. We have just received word that the show has been picked up for UK broadcast. That's one step closer to coming here to the states!

Military Dealer: As his direct-to-collector business flourished, he decided to branch out to start online marketing as a source for collectors. Tell us about the Hunter Stores Story.

I made a bold decision to change my business model to a marketing format because the stock market is so amazing, that the old "buy and sell" model no longer works. It is broken. You already know where to buy furniture to play. Today, in a world that has not recovered from the financial disaster of 2008, that is very difficult to do unless you buy something expensive, not necessary.

California Collector's Hitler Artifacts Could Fetch Millions At German Auction

If you don't believe me, ask other sellers how their business is doing. So far, only one other seller has copied me, and I expect more to do so in the years to come.

Military Trader: One of the risks in any auction is that some people will use it to discard questionable materials. What safeguards do you have in place to protect customers?

Believe me, people have tried! You can't imagine some of the craziness I had to send back to collectors and dealers with "no thanks." But it is a fair point.

I solved the problem by being the first (and currently only) auctioneer to offer a lifetime warranty that fully guarantees transportation on every crane we ship. So, it's in

The Market For Disturbing Nazi Artifacts Is Growing. Who Is Buying Them—and Why?

In the past, if a seller made a mistake, the buyer suffered. In my aution, I am left holding the Prorbial bag!

A better question is, "How has it worked for my customers?" So far, we have had 15 auctions, with an average of 300 items in each auction. Out of almost 5,000 items, I got about 10 back. It is a small price to pay for the pride of knowing that we are doing our job, and that collectors have a new way to buy and sell.

Military Salesman: I'm sorry, but we have to ask...Where's the Segway? Are you part of the big picture or is it easy for you to hit the ground running at shows.

Craig Gottlieb Militaria

I love how easy it is to get from one side of the hall to the other in a few minutes, but there are problems. First, I realized that when I was browsing, I missed some of the best "finds". Second, eventually I'll run into someone or fall off. Although the second one will be funny for everyone, I decided to return to the world of walking. I sold the Segway.

History Hunter' Craig Gottlieb Unlocks The Mysteries Of World War Ii

Military marketer: What about conferences? He is a pioneer on the Internet, having created Germandaggers.com (GDC) in 2000, and was one of the first members of the Wehrmacht-Awards.com website. But he took off GDC, and last year, he left WAF. Tell me about that.

I gave GDC to my partner Vern Bryant when I became a full-time salesperson, because I thought it was a conflict of interest to be a "receptive advocate" and I was a full-time salesperson. It is difficult for me to wear both hats.

The Wehrmacht-Awards are a different story. You must know that I am a "popular" topic on the forum, to put it properly. I understand that there are people who do not like me, and for some of them, it seems that they have all the fun

. They'll take the few mistakes I've made (all of which I've tried to correct) and blow them off the scale with thousands of successful deals under my belt. They don't want to talk about I have very high customer satisfaction and work hard to make sure every customer walks away happy no matter what.

Don't get me wrong...there are a lot of great people on the forums, but these "bad apples" really disappoint me. My candidates have been asking for years "why do I bother," but yes
