I have always valued education since I was very young - I am a firm believer that without education there is no future. I had a great time at school and although teaching wasn't something I had in mind initially, when I chose A levels my teacher suggested I should consider it. They clearly saw something in me that I couldn't see then! I went on to do a degree in education and really enjoyed it. Every day you make a difference. It won't be easy - as evidenced by the sheer number of teachers who leave the profession, but for me, the rewards completely outweigh any obstacles.
For the past few years I have worked in a federation of four primary schools near Tower Bridge in central London. I start teaching in 3rd year and move on to 6th year to prepare students for SATS exams. In addition to being the subject leader and director of mathematics for the entire federation, I have also served as a team leader, high school principal, gym, activities and club director, and was most recently appointed director of mental health. It has been very busy and challenging. I appreciate the opportunity to improve my leadership and management skills and truly make a difference in the educational experience of students in schools.
I think it is extremely important to connect with students and build mutual respect and trust, and I have seen this at Queen Mary. To me, a good educator, whatever their role in school, is caring and patient. I believe that children should be given the best academic start in life that we can give them, but they should also be able to reason, listen and form their own opinions. What really matters is preparing them for life in the 21st century, as good citizens and ready for the world around them. They need to be adaptable, responsive and flexible - ready for life.
In sixth grade, I had a teacher, Mr. Conforth, who is now the principal of my old school. I really like him when he invests time in me. I enjoy motivating the students in my care in the same way and hope they will remember me in years to come.

To quote the prospectus: I'm looking forward to turning this into my story! I am delighted to join us at a time when the school is booming, with record numbers of students at the Prep School and excellent value-add results. From this I look forward to building on the many transferable skills and practices I have learned and brought to Queen Mary through the new Pre-Prep Development. I'm already counting down the days to September and can't wait to meet the students and their families, get involved in life at QMS, and embrace the lifestyle and community here.
It's 'wow'! It's quite a grand building, and the portraits of King George and Queen Mary looking down on me might have been intimidating, but it felt like a warm handshake from the start. I then toured the school and when I met several students and staff they were all very friendly and welcoming and I really felt that matched my own values and ethos.
What key skills do you hope to bring to your role as Assistant Principal: Prep and Prep School?
One of the learning systems I've recently trained and implemented is called "sticky learning" - helping students connect what they've learned before, maybe the previous year, so they see their education as a journey , rather than a journey. A loose set of facts. I want to make sure students have a better understanding of the course and why they are being taught that particular fact or topic.

As a wellness leader, I believe it is important to help children express their feelings and develop their emotional intelligence, as I believe this is a skill that will benefit them throughout their lives. I recently took part in a study at the Southwark School, supported and conducted by Yale, which provided children with the tools to regulate their emotions, leading to improved academic performance.
Yes, I have two! Alan is a working cocker spaniel and I also have a Jack Russell named Steven. I look forward to taking them to work so they can meet all the staff and students!
