Insight Aircraft Instruments - Universal Avionics InSight System flight deck upgrades add the latest technology to older Part 25 aircraft, like this Citation VII.

Following the recent TSO approval for the InSight Display System and STC approval for the new integrated cockpit installation of InSight on the Citation VII, Universal Avionics Systems (Booth N2821) highlights the next InSight upgrade program on the Falcon 50 and the new installation on the Falcon 50. Citation VII.

Universal Avionics dealer Chicago Jet will design the Falcon 50 InSight upgrade and demonstrate the system in a preserved Falcon 50 cockpit at NBAA's Chicago Jet booth (N3132). The upgrade will include four Universal EFI-1040 displays, a UniLink UL-801 communications control unit, and a CVR-120A sound recorder, which meet the requirements for FAN approval.

Cockpit And Mission System Modernization

In addition, the Chicago Jet combines the Falcon 50's original warning panel with a new and reliable 50-LED panel, which includes a red master warning flasher and amber backup lights, new digital audio control panels, LED screen lighting, LED backlighting for the dashboard overhead and ATC safety voice confirmation. Chicago Jet is also developing a Falcon 900 InSight cockpit upgrade.

"We created a NextGen solution for Falcon 50 operators, rather than sticking with 20-year-old technology as an upgrade," said Mike Mitera, president of Chicago Jet Group.

The InSight upgrade brings the cockpits to the latest NextGen capabilities, including synthetic vision with advanced mapping, frequency control, broadcast weather and electronic charts powered by a new Jeppesen flight data element. According to Universal Avionics, Jeppesen data includes an airport mapping database, digital maps, NavData and cultural services that provide 3D rendering of "critical airport and flight path information via the InSight platform to improve situational awareness for pilots."

The first was the upgrade of the InSight flight deck to Universal's Citation VII, and this can be seen on the static display at Henderson Airport this week. The next installation of the Citation VII is for an international operator in Latin America and will be done by Universal dealer Millennial Technologies. This is also the first Citation VII upgrade since Universal received the STC for the installation last month.

The Millennial installation will include four InSight EFI-1040 displays, a Universal Engine Interface Unit, TAWS Class A and a UNS-1Fw SBAS FMS with ADS-B Out. Millennial is completing renovations at its facility in Opa-Locka, Florida.

In addition to the NextGen features that are part of InSight, the new upgrade offers lower system weight and the ability to interface with many types of existing components, such as AHRS sensors, air data computers, radars, traffic systems, radios and autopilots. This allows owners to maintain some equipment instead of replacing components that still have a useful life.

"As avionics products evolve every day, we encourage our customers to invest in such systems, not only to improve situational awareness, comply with new FAA regulations and reduce crew workload, but also to improve efficiency and increase safety of every flight." said Millennial CEO Gabriel Maestracci Universal Avionics (UA) announces five new InSight Display System aircraft solutions. In addition to the Citation VII InSight solution established by the company, recent developments with the Falcon 900B, Falcon 50, Hawker 800XP, Gulfstream G-III and MD 902 Explorer reflect the growing market acceptance of the system.

Dror Yahav, CEO of UA, said: "The adoption of the InSight Integrated Flight Deck Solution by many leading commercial operators is a recognition of its quality and advanced features. InSight offers advanced capabilities and a development path for seamless integration with our innovative products as well as System Enhanced Flight Vision is ClearVision and future connectivity opportunities."

Designed as an integrated flight deck solution for both retrofitting and forward-looking aircraft, InSight includes a second-generation embedded 3D Synthetic Vision System (SVS), advanced mapping capabilities, electronic charts, and more. Key benefits of the system include improved situational awareness, increased reliability and intuitive control and input for improved crew interactivity. In addition to the flight management system (FMS) and the flight control system, FANS 1/A+, SBAS / LPV and escalation path to EFVS.

The InSight Integrated Flight Deck solution for the Falcon 900B includes two options; one supporting UA FMS, and a second OEM-supported upgrade solution from Dassault Falcon Jet that seamlessly integrates with Honeywell's NZ-2000 FMS Version 6.1 (or later releases).

In the case of the Citation VII, the latest updates open the door for all Citation VII aircraft to install InSight, whether equipped with existing Honeywell or Collins Nav/Comm packages.

Mid-Canada Mod Center (MC2) in Toronto has completed the first Canadian installation of the Universal Avionics Systems (UASC) InSight Display System at the airport. Modifications were made in 1995 to the Canadian registered Cessna Citation VII.

"The cost to repair older avionics on an aircraft of this age is typically very high, and some systems are no longer supported," said MC2 president Bill Arsenault, noting that the Citation VII has relatively little upgrade path. "The main goals here were to improve safety through better situational awareness and extend the life of the aircraft with a modern cockpit."

The project included air connectivity and a comprehensive aircraft upgrade with 10.4 inch EFI-1040 displays, EFIS touch display unit, alphabetic keyboard and reference selection panel, concentration unit II, engine interface unit and Class A TAWS. The system offers LPV approach, ADS-B Out and CPDLC / CPDLC digital clearance capabilities, as well as an upgrade path that offers improved flight vision system capabilities.

Key features include built-in 3D synthetic vision, advanced mapping, electronic charts, and the ability to customize displays for different phases of flight. The FMS installation also includes UASC's FlexPerf option, which the avionics manufacturer says provides advanced fuel economy predictions for aircraft performance in all phases of flight.

Arsenault told AIN that a new Transport Canada (TC) type certificate (STC) has been developed to cover the deviation from UA's original STC through "several improvements such as software updates and the addition of an electronic waiting tool." Sister company of MC2 Avionics Design Services, an authorized TC design approval organization.

As a result, the UASC system is now a solution for all Citation VIIs with existing Honeywell and Collins avionics. It allows the operator to land at unfamiliar airports with confidence, simplify controls and user input and increase component reliability, the manufacturer said.
